KACI

I was taking the biggest risk. What if Luke didn’t want to see me again? What if he really meant what he said that night I left? Memories of that night burned my skull.

“Kaci if you walk out that door you better not come crawling back here!”

I was so crawling back. And I was buying a house. One big huge commitment. I pushed my hands to my eyes so hard I saw stars.

Tash came into my room plopping down on the bed. “You’re really leaving me?”

“Yeah. I’m ready to go home.”

She lay on her stomach feet in the air looking down at me on the floor. “Are you going to get back with that guy? What’s his name?”

“Luke.”

“Yeah! He’s so hot Kaci you’ve got to!”

Typical Tash. Gushing over every guy ever. Even when she was engaged. Even the ones who were taken. Well technically Luke wasn’t… or maybe he was. The thought of another woman touching him made me sick. Tears welled up in my eyes.

“He is very handsome.”

“Well I’ll miss having you around.” Tash jumped up opening her arms.

I stood stepping into her arms. “Me too.”

She pushed me back keeping her hands on my shoulders. “No you won’t! You’ve been moping around here the whole time about Luke. I got you to come to like one party.”

Swiping at the tear that fell free I laughed. “I know.” She giggled with me.

A snort came out of Tash making us both laugh even harder. We hugged a few more times before she helped me carry the few boxes out to my car.

“Go fix that broken heart of yours.”

“Thanks Tash. For everything.”

“Of course.” She waved as I climbed in the car.

Pulling out of the driveway I didn’t look back. Tash hadn’t wanted any of my money while I stayed with her. All she asked was that I cook and clean. Which were two things I was good at. I had saved a ton of money being here. Her fiancé, Dane, was in charge of the house bills while Tash bought all the groceries.

Tash was right, I definitely would not miss the city of Holbrook.

Eight Months Ago

“You’re going.” Tash tugged me off the bed.

“No I don’t want to.”

“It’s literally downstairs. You can come back up to your room after an hour if you hate it that much.” She started rifling through clothes in my closet. “Okay here wear this.”

Ripping the top from her hands I groaned. “This is way to low cut.”

“You’re wearing it! The best way to get over a guy is to get under one.”

“That’s a no. That is not going to happen.”

“We’ll see.” Tash skipped out of my room.

Picking out a different shirt, one that was more conservative, I pulled on jeans and boots before heading downstairs. Music boomed through the speakers. People were everywhere. I found Tash playing beer pong with Dane. Turning around I headed for the cooler of beer.
