My mom was the best. She was always taking care of everyone and everything. She always made dessert which didn’t help my sweet tooth any. I was glad she hadn’t asked about Kaci. I knew she knew. But I was glad she hadn’t brought it up just yet.
Once I got some food ate. I opened a land so we could start the other half of the field.
Pulling out my phone I texted her.

Her response was almost instant.

Just picked a new land what about you
I ate a piece of my mom’s banana bread and swung out the auger.
Ugh cleaning
You got the day off?
Yeah.
Sweet. Guess what I’m eating
Corn?
Funny. Momma A’s banana bread!
SHUT UP!!!!!
Can’t. Too much banana bread!
God I love your mom and her banana bread!
Everyone did. Amy was a mom to all my friends growing up. Hints the nickname she got years ago, Momma A. Kaci had called her that since the first time they met.
Nine Years Ago
“Mom remember that girl from school I was telling you about?”
She acted puzzled even though she knew exactly who I was talking about. “Yes, Sharon and Tony’s oldest.”
“Yeah well I asked her to go on a drive with me tonight.”
I was so nervous. It would be the first time that we would actually be alone without a group of people around us. Well besides the night I took her home. Sure we’d all been out to the local diner together a few times but this was different.
We had been texting back and forth a lot lately and I had been walking with her from class to class. You could say this was a first date. If you consider driving around on back roads a date. I would. But maybe she wouldn’t.
Mom’s voice broke though my thoughts. “Luke.”
“What sorry.”
“I said you’re not going to bring her to the house first so dad and I can meet her?”
“Uh no, its only the first whatever.” Did I want her to meet my parents? Fuck I don’t know my mom was an angel but my dad was, well my dad. “I’ll bring her over next week sometime okay?”
“Okay. Love you. Have fun and Luke?”
