LUKE

I promised Kaci that I would take her to the festival a couple nights this week. Every year Falls had a week long carnival with rodeos and concerts. Kaci loved the rodeo while I hated it. But it was something she wanted to do so I was happy she was letting me tag along.

The past few weeks had been nothing short of perfect. Her face beamed as we watched the horses run around some barrels. She hooped and hollered at the women in the arena.

“Get up! Get up! Get up!” Kaci flew to her feet in the stands.

It was more fun to watch her than the rodeo itself. Once the barrel racing concluded we made our way down the grand stands to the food tent. Kaci’s hand reached out for mine intertwining our fingers together.

There was no label on anything. We were almost rediscovering each other. I was okay with that. For now.

Her other hand snaked around my bicep squeezing. “Let’s go get a funnel cake.”

“How did I know?” I pressed my lips to her forehead as we made our way to the funnel cake stand.

As we stood in line she went on and on about the rodeo and her favorites of each event. I simply watched the way her lips moved. How her eyes would light up when she went into detail about how awesome their lives must be.

She was absolutely beautiful. Tonight in her teal tank top and flare pants she was seriously sexy. Her icy blonde curls fell down the swell of her breasts distracting me even more from what she was saying.

A man’s voice cut through my wicked thoughts. “Hey Kaci how have you been?”

Swinging my head to the side I took him in. Who was this? He drew closer and pulled Kaci in for a hug.

“I’m great! How are you?” They talked like they were old friends. My insides began to boil.

“Good good. How’s the back getting along?”

“It’s better. A lot better actually.” She smiled wide.

“Next!”

Stepping up to the window I put my hand on the small of Kaci’s back. “What do you want babe?” I side-eyed the little man who had just hugged Kaci.

“Can we get a regular one and a strawberry one please?”

“Yup that will be sixteen dollars. If you could step to the side.” Handing her a twenty I told her to keep the change. Kaci was already to the side talking with whoever this was.

“Luke this is my friend Kyle and Kyle this is my boyfriend Luke.” Boyfriend huh? That simmered my anger a bit. Not at the fact that this was the douche bag Kyle I knew was constantly blowing up her phone. The one who helped her forget about me.

Reaching my hand out I shook his. “Nice to meet you.” It wasn’t.

After finishing our funnel cakes we walked out to my pickup hand in hand.

“So how do you know that guy again?” I couldn’t help but ask. I was curious and also a little jealous.

“You know my childhood friend Tash? Well that’s her fiancés best friend. We hung out a lot last year. Trust me nothing happened. He’s not...” She searched for the words. “He’s just not my type. I think he wanted it to but, no.”

My anger melted away at her comment.

“Besides, I hear you have a boyfriend anyways.”

Kaci lifted her head from my shoulder. “Always.”

“Is that so?”

She walked backwards in front of me. “Luke you’re always gonna be mine. Even when you think you’re not. You’re mine.”

Pulling her into my chest I captured her lips with mine. The sweetness from the funnel cake was still on her tongue. Her hips pressed into mine before she broke the kiss. Standing on the tips of her toes she nibbled my ear before whispering.
