Holt reached Knox in two steps and drove his fist into his brother’s jaw. Knox was a strong guy, but caught by surprise, he staggered and fell to the ground.

A gasp from the front porch told Holt that his mother had seen, and the little girl crying told him that she had Ruby with her.

Knox scrambled to his feet and rammed into Holt.

“You piece of sh—” Knox shouted, but Holt cut him off with a punch to the gut.

Both of them went down. Fists flying.

Someone screamed, and Holt could swear it was Macie. Had she turned around? He was too preoccupied trying to prevent his brother from breaking his nose to pay much attention. It seemed the drinking and womanizing had caught up to his little brother after all, because soon, Holt had Knox pinned in the dirt.

“That’s enough,” Rex said in a steely tone.

Chest heaving, Holt got to his feet. Seconds later, Knox scrambled up and away from him.

Knox’s lip was bleeding, but he wasn’t much worse for the wear. Pointing a trembling finger at Holt, he said, “You’re not going to get away with this. You think you can take everything from me? Well, you’ve got another thing coming.”

He snatched his cowboy hat from the ground, then strode to his truck. Engine roaring and tires spinning in the gravel, Knox took off without looking back.
