SADIE

My Axel Everett article was a hot pile of garbage. I didn’t have any leads on anyone who could confirm he and his family actually had a place here, and for some reason I couldn’t force myself to fill the pages with speculation and conjecture. Normally bullshit would flow from my fingertips on command, but this time around it wasn’t happening. Eirin was going to tear this thing apart.

The piece about the festival was coming along great, which was impressive, considering the festival hadn’t even started yet. Kobie was a wealth of information. Once I had some firsthand experience, a few pictures, and some quotes, it would be perfect.

Too bad it was the one my boss cared about the least.

I slammed my laptop shut, resisting the urge to chuck it across Drew’s living room.

“Having trouble?”

My heart ricocheted in my chest. “Jesus. I didn’t hear you come in.”

“Came in through the side door.” His grin turned lascivious when he looked down at my closed laptop. “That mean you’re done for the night?”

My brewing tension headache evaporated. “Unfortunately, no.”

He pouted.

“But it does mean I’m ready for a break.” I slid the laptop onto the coffee table.

“That’s what I like to hear.” He stalked toward me, all coiled power. “You look like you could use a stress reliever.”

His jet-black hair was mussed up. Like he’d been doing actual physical labor, not like he’d spent thirty minutes in the mirror with product to give the illusion of it being artfully disheveled. A few smudges of white drywall dust streaked across his jeans. He unzipped his jacket and tossed it on an armchair, his chest and biceps straining against the gray T-shirt underneath.

The look on his face was downright wolfish, and my heart beat at a rabbit’s pace.

He leaned over, resting both hands on the back of the couch behind me, caging me in. His bright blue eyes blazed a path across my skin, and he ran his tongue along his full bottom lip.

Everything about this man oozed confidence. He looked at me like he was ready to eat me alive. In the best possible way.

I didn’t understand how people in this town could lay eyes on him and see something fragile. Like one of those porcelain figurines in the cabinet by his front door.

He dropped his head, his teeth grazing my earlobe before his mouth made contact with the delicate spot behind my ear he’d quickly learned would elicit a moan. His lips were warm and insistent as they trailed down my neck.

“Why do you still have pants on?” he murmured into my collarbone.

The majority of my cognitive power focused on his lips on my skin, but my thoughts from the day still swirled around in the back of my mind. How everyone in town tiptoed around the subject of how he lost his leg. How even though his ex had moved on, she still somehow got a vote on whether he should be invited to be involved in the festival. How I still hadn’t seen him completely naked, probably wasn’t going to before this thing was over, and he’d redirected things whenever I got close to going down on him.

An overwhelming compulsion to claim him washed over me. I grabbed the neck of his T-shirt, pulling his mouth to mine in a fierce kiss before standing without breaking our lips apart. He mistook my standing for getting ready to strip down and tried to make himself helpful, but I batted his hands away from my jeans.

Grabbing his shoulders, I turned him around, then shoved him down onto the couch into my vacated spot. Luckily, I had the element of surprise. Otherwise, I don’t think he would have let me manhandle him like that.

He laughed. “What are you doing?”

I dropped to my knees between his spread legs and popped his fly open.

“Sadie, you don’t have to—”

“Shut up. You can keep your pants on.” He already strained against his boxer briefs as I reached in to free him.

“I— Oh my god…” His protests died on his lips as his head dropped to the back of the couch. I had his cock out and in my mouth before he had the chance to make any more excuses.

“Luth muh ab dis,” I mumbled across his skin.

A delicious groan poured out of his throat. “What?” he panted.

Lifting my mouth off his cock with a popping sound, I stared at him in challenge. “Let me have this.”
