“You’re not going to want to miss it,” Kobie said. “We’ll head right over to get it started after the opening ceremony is over. Drew and I will be announcing the numbers.”

“Right.” I sobered.

“Speaking of which.” She glanced at her watch. “He should be here any minute. Want to come see the backstage area where we get everything ready for the opening ceremony?”

“Oh…I was hoping to get some pictures of the axe-throwing booth. I think I’ll hang out over there for a few minutes first. Besides, I don’t want to get you in any trouble with Eloise for sneaking me into a restricted area.”

“Nonsense. What’s she going to do at this point?” She spread her arms and looked around. “The festival is already happening. It’s not like the committee can fire me.” She grinned but nausea rolled through me at the mention of being fired. “Besides,” she went on, “things will be way busier later tonight so you can get pictures with a bigger crowd then.”

“Yeah, but I want to make sure I get plenty before the sun goes down when I’ve got good light.”

She studied me for a second, then shrugged. “Well, you’re the expert. Just make sure you’re not late. We wouldn’t want you to miss the big Valor King reveal.”

“Of course.” I nodded. But that was the problem. I wasn’t ready for the reveal where Drew told me how he really felt.
