My heartbeat immediately ramps up, sweat springs to my palms, and my throat goes dry. All my careful planning and I didn’t think to grab a water or something. “You were?” I croak out.

“Yeah. I’m planning to take Barnabas and Quentin to a local dog park, and I know it’s late notice, but wanna join us?”

“Sure. Where is it?” My hand tightens on the phone. It wouldn’t be my choice for an official first date, but spending more time with Brittany sounds good. Plus, I’m sure Tory will love the dog park. I haven’t taken him in a few weeks. “Ummm... is this a date?” I ask cautiously.

Her bright laughter pierces my ears and I yank the phone away. “Is that a no?” I ask when her laughter dies down.

“You’re hilarious. I mean, I guess we can call it a date if you want to. I just want to see you again.”

Swallowing past a lump in my throat, I say, “I want to see you too.”

“Great! The dog park on King’s Avenue is where I’m heading. See you there in like twenty?”

Doing some swift calculations, including a change of clothes, that’s doable. “See you then.”
