I couldn’t help it. I burst into laughter. Thankfully he joined right on in. He was the best kind of corny—purposefully corny. It was true, if a guy was handsome enough, even a cheesy pickup line was a little bit hot.

I stopped in front of a thirty-story building with a fountain out front. The Howard building. I dug a penny out of the bottom of my purse. I had no idea if it was a wishing well, but I could use all the help I could get that morning.

I squeezed my eyes shut, made my wish, and tossed it in.

“What was that for?” Kai asked.

“Luck. I’m about to interview for an amazing job.”

“Got a penny to spare? I’d like to make a wish. I’m up for a new job this morning too.”

“I remember you mentioning that on the bus.” I found one more Lincoln hiding in the dark and fuzzy recesses of my purse and held it out to him in my open palm. “Good luck.”

Sparks traveled up my arm when his fingertips brushed my skin. He held the penny between his thumb and index finger and locked his gaze onto mine. “I don’t think it’ll take that much luck to get me hired, but I appreciate the sentiment.”

“Then give me back my penny.”

He took half a step closer, invading my space. I didn’t hate it. The air around us sizzled as his gaze intensified. He tossed the coin into the water without taking his eyes off of me. “Looks like I get a wish, after all… donut girl.”

I answered with the most sophisticated gulp any woman has ever gulped.

“Aloha.” He turned and headed into the building.

The Howard building.

My building.
