CHAPTER23

It was a two-hour drive to the embassy, and Antonio was going as fast as he could through the mountain roads. The rains had started, and his windshield wipers did nothing, but were working as fast as they could.

It had been too easy.

No other cars on the road, as if they knew of the rains coming and the dangers. He couldn’t go as fast as he wanted, and the drive seemed to take forever, as he dodged pits and ruts in the road filling with mud.

He could see the lights of the city around intermittent curves and each time, his heart sank a little further with the unknown. Katie would be safe in the embassy, but he would be a criminal until he could contact his handler. He longed to hold her and care for her there, but knew it would be futile. She wouldn’t want to have anything to do with him.

She’d tried to kill herself because of him.

And he wasn’t sure how contact a man who hadn’t spoken to him in over six years anyway. He was essentially putting himself in prison. But for her safety? It was worth it.

He’d been recruited for this job over a decade ago, sitting on a sidewalk outside a cafe in DC. But he hadn’t heard a peep from the man who was supposed to lead him through it in over six years.

He’d done his part, not expecting much contact from the man, but some contact had been expected. If nothing more than just status reports on the commander’s end.

And now, he was on his way to the embassy, his only way out, hoping beyond hope that he could be saved, but knowing he probably wouldn’t.

At least Katie would.

He’d been warned from the get-go. Things happened deep undercover. Unforeseen things, and they were supposed to have contingency plans in place, but there was always a possibility his cover would be too deep.

He came around a curve and saw the lights of Tegucigalpa ahead of him.

And a roadblock between him and his salvation.

No.

He reached for his gun as he slowed, putting it where he could reach it. He spared a glance at his woman in the seat next to him, resisting the urge to reach for her and protect her in her sleep.

A truck pulled up behind him, just as the police officer walked up to his side of the truck. The truck had blinding headlights as well as rooftop lights, and a spotlight shining out of the driver’s side.

Hector.

He’d know that truck anywhere. He’d often teased Hector and his favorite method of transportation, telling the man his choice of vehicle made the size of his penis obvious to anyone seeing him drive it.

Another trap.

It was over. He’d have to shoot his way out of this one.

Through his side mirror, he saw Hector get out of the truck and make his way to him, just as the policeman told him to step out of the vehicle, his own gun held at his arm.

“Don’t try it,” a voice from the passenger window spoke to him, and he saw another man; police or not, it didn’t matter. These cops were paid for by El Cuchillo himself. The man at the passenger window had a gun held to Katie’s temple.

It was over.

For both of them.

If he resisted, they would both be dead. That much was obvious. They were probably dead anyway, but if he went along with them, they might have a chance at survival.

That was his last thought before the officer next to him used the butt of his gun at his temple and it was lights out for Antonio.
