CHAPTER24

Antonio awoke from unconsciousness in a dark room, chained to a wall.

He knew exactly where he was. He looked around, his head pounding and heart racing, to see the shadow of Katie chained to the wall next to him.

“Katie,” he whispered. Then he called her name louder. She stirred, but didn’t wake. At least she moved.

She wasn’t dead.

Probably the drugs, or maybe she’d been hit in the head when they’d been captured. He was worried about her, had hoped she’d get medical treatment at the embassy by now. But fucking Hector had ruined that.

It took him a moment to realize he was rattling his chains and it wasn’t intentional. His muscles trembled and he realized what it was.

He needed a pill. Not having a clue what time it was now, he could only guess it was more than twelve hours, way past his usual time for another pill.

How many was he taking a day now?

He was definitely overdue.

Which meant he was about to be out of his head.

Just one pill. Just to get him through this. He was about to start the detoxing process and wouldn’t be able to get Katie out of here.

He was already shaking. Soon he would be vomiting and probably have diarrhea. He’d be out of his head.

Antonio knew what would happen. He’d looked it up, knowing it was something he needed to do. But the reality of detoxing in these circumstances hadn’t been worth it since the pills helped with this place.

He couldn’t do it now, though. He had to get them out of here somehow. But his will alone wouldn’t help him. Not now.

Nobody was here. They were alone. He couldn’t reach to search his pockets to see if he had a stray pill tucked in there.

His eyes drifted closed. There was nothing else to do.
