CHAPTER25

Katie opened her eyes, or at least she thought she had.

It was so dark.

Was this death?

Only… Her hands. She couldn’t move her hands. And her shoulders hurt.

She’d often wondered about death. Was it simply a lack of consciousness or a lack of a physical body? She certainly didn’t see any angels singing or bugling or whatever angels did.

A faint recollection of right after she’d taken all those pills, but before she’d passed out hit her.

Regret.

She hadn’t really wanted to die, but by the time she had that thought, it was too late.

And now, here she was… dead?

Katie still wasn’t sure. Her shoulders ached, her head pounded, and her heart was racing. So she could feel her physical body. But she couldn’t see anything.

She turned her head all around. Her arms were stretched above her head, being held by something. But her fingers were numb and she couldn’t feel anything.

Darkness, except next to her, just out of reach.

A shadow that could be a man.

The shadow moaned. It was a familiar noise. She had no idea where she was, how long she’d been here, but that moan sounded like the asshole who’d kept her in his cottage.

“Antonio?” she managed, her voice sounding far away.

The shadow jerked at the sound of her voice. It moaned again, like he was trying to speak, but it wasn’t anything she understood.

She had no idea how long she’d been here or what had happened.

This was becoming the story of her life.

Why was he just sitting there? Why hadn’t he responded?

Was Antonio hurt? A sense of panic rose at that thought.

She didn’t like him. He was the one who had gotten her into this mess.

But he’d also been the one to unchain her, feed her, keep her clean and clothed, let her sleep in his bed.

But he’d also assaulted her. That memory came flying to the forefront of her mind, flaying her alive.

Then, like a lightbulb, clarity flashed. Or it was drugs, she couldn’t be sure, but his words came back to her loud and clear.

Fuck me or fight me, just make it look good.

He’d known the others were coming. It was a show for them. He’d been protecting her. Twisted, yes, but in this place where rules didn’t apply, it sort of made sense.

He’d taken care of her here.

She wished he would hold her. She was in an awkward position and couldn’t seem to get her muscles to work. He’d helped her with everything else; couldn’t he help with this?

The darkness managed to overcome her thoughts, tugging her down into unconsciousness once again.
