TWENTY-TWO

Davit

“Remember, no change of routine,”I said.

She nodded like she understood, but I held her gaze, hoping she got the importance of this.

“I got it,” she said with emphasis.

“Good. Take this,” I said.

I handed her a phone. “I have a cell phone,” she said.

“I have to assume that all of your communications have been intercepted. We did a sweep of the house, so there are no recording devices, but there’s no telling what’s on your phone or computer.”

“You mean someone is…”

“Listening?”

She nodded.

“Maybe. Maybe not. I don’t want to take the risk, and I don’t want to tip off whoever is listening. So just behave normally, but take this phone. There’s a number preprogrammed in there. Call it if you need me,” I said.

“Okay,” she responded, but her expression told me that it would be a cold day in hell before she pushed that button.

“I mean it,” I said.

“And I said I heard you,” she responded.

“Good. We’re about a block away from your yoga studio. Just walk home, go inside. Everything should be in order.”

“Okay.”

I watched as she got out of the car, suppressing the deep, almost uncontrollable urge to kiss her.

I wasn’t sure where that came from, or rather, didn’t want to admit where it had come from.

Complications were something that I had no space for, and Amethyst was quickly becoming one.

But I would keep that in check.

I had men watching her, men that I trusted, ones who knew the penalty for screwups.

So I could focus, see what was behind all this, and cut it off before it affected the family.

I drove to the office building Elias had acquired, one that had a single tenant.

I found him there and nodded at him as I approached.

“You look tired,” I said.

“Yeah, I got a lot of shit going on,” he said.

“Anything I can help with?”

“I think you have your hands plenty full yourself,” he said.

I tried to ignore the familiar sting of irritation. He didn’t mean anything by it. But it still pissed me off. He respected me to an extent but often thought of me as his much younger brother, one who needed to be managed just like everything else in the organization.
