He didn’t view me as an equal, and I tried not to let that get to me, but it rankled.

Not that I would ever show it.

“In fact, I have everything in hand,” I said.

“Do you?” He responded.

I nodded.

“And who tried to kill Amethyst James?”

“Don’t know yet,” I responded.

“Right. You have everything in hand.”

“Don’t fucking condescend to me, Elias,” I said.

“Then stop fucking up.”

“How have I fucked up?”

“You built this whole Josh Kelley shit, and you won’t just cut it off.”

“You mean I won’t just kill Amethyst,” I said.

“That would be one very convenient and easy way. Because this is getting out of hand. You’re young. You don’t see that, but—”

“You sound like Father,” I said.

“You wanna kick me in the balls next?”

I laughed, and he softened, though I could still see the intensity in his eyes.

“Elias, I understand. I know how complicated this is. How delicate. But we need James Industries right now. It’s the easiest way for us to move product, and pulling out now would weaken our American holdings. It’s not a smart play,” I said.

I waited a moment as he considered it and then continued.

“And you know that I’ll do what’s best for the family.”

“No matter what?” he asked.

I nodded “No matter what.”

“I hope that’s not put to the test,” he said.

“If it is, I’ll be up to it,” I responded.

I looked at my watch, then looked at him.

“Right, you got to get to work,” he said.

“Yeah,” I responded.

“Take care of yourself, Davit,” he said on a deep sigh.

I left without responding, but in my head, I had an answer.

I would take care of myself, and Amethyst, and the Petrosyan family.

My brother might not believe it, but I was more than up to the challenge.
