The last was no easy feat, not when Josh was practically stalking toward me, eyes lasered on mine, making me feel exposed—something he was very, very good at.

I blinked, grateful for the glasses that covered my eyes, and wiped my hands down my pants—a nervous habit I’d never been able to shake, but fortunately, I did it so often Josh would never know he was the cause.

At least that was what I hoped.

I plastered a smile on my face as he came to stop in front of me.

“And what is my expression saying?” he asked, his deep, silky voice sending a shiver through me, one that I ignored.

“It’s telling me that you didn’t pick a flavor because you’re not going to be at the ice cream social, but I know that can’t be right.” I tilted my head and smiled at him.

He turned the corners of his mouth up half an inch, and his eyes still sparkled, all but confirming the truth of what I’d said.

“Come on, Josh.”

I folded my arms under my breasts and noticed that Josh looked down. But I knew he didn’t mean anything by it, so I pressed on, making a big show of my disappointment.

“You know that kind of stuff is not my thing,” he said.

“It’s nobody’s thing. That’s why everybody does it. Team building and all that.”

I gave him a bright smile, and he returned it.

“I think that’s your department,” he said.

“No, my department is files and records. But I got drafted into organizing team-building activities. So you, as my dear friend, should feel obligated to attend these events that I so lovingly plan.”

He laughed, the sound rich, deep.

Genuine.

“Well, when you say it like that, you almost make it impossible to say no.” He shrugged.

I perked up, smiled, thinking that maybe…

“Almost, but not quite,” he said, his knowing smile telling me that he had seen how much I’d hoped.

“You suck, Josh,” I said with a deep scoff, though I was smiling.

He just laughed, and I shook my head.

I made a big show of striking an X through his name. “So, no Josh Kelley at the ice cream social?”

He nodded.

I tilted my head and lifted a brow. “But you are signing up for the softball team this year?”

He shook his head. “Amy…”

I rolled my eyes. “Yeah, yeah. No softball either. As I said, you suck.”

“And I’ll see you later,” he said.

He turned to leave, waving behind him as him moved.

I forced myself to look away.

It wouldn’t do for me to be caught mooning after him, though not doing so was impossible.
