An hour later, I was interrupted by a knock on my door.

“What are you doing?” Josh asked as he leaned against the door frame.

I felt a moment of elation when I looked at his handsome face and saw his smile.

“What does it look like?” I answered, trying to sound playful, though given the little frown that crossed his face, he didn’t fall for it.

“It looks like you’re making boxes. Shouldn’t one of the interns or admins handle that?” he said.

“No,” I said, shaking my head. “It’s my responsibility, and I’ll take care of it.”

“Okay.” He didn’t say anything else, just stood there.

“May I help you with something, Josh?” I said, sounding much harsher than I intended.

He tilted his head and studied me, his dark eyes probing.

“You okay, Amy?”

No.

That was my first thought, and I wanted to say that, wanted to throw myself into his arms, wanted to trust that he would hold me.

But I couldn’t do that.

“I’m fine,” I said, though I knew he didn’t believe me.

He didn’t press.

“Did you need something?” I asked, mostly trying to get rid of him while I still had control of my emotions.

“It’s nothing. I’ll see you around. And, Amy,” he said as he lingered at the door.

He didn’t finish, not until I looked up.

“I’m here if you need me,” he said.

“Thanks,” I responded, giving him a smile that I knew didn’t reach my eyes.

He looked like he wanted to say something else but didn’t.

After he left, I took a moment to breathe, drank my coffee, and then got to work.

I cleaned until the office was pristine, sparkling, which took the entire day.

By the time six rolled around, I was sweaty and exhausted, ready to crawl into bed.

But my day wasn’t done.

I had intended to talk to my father about the pattern I’d found, but I couldn’t.

Not yet.

I needed more before I went to him.

As I had been cleaning the office, my wheels had been turning.

A ship was coming in tonight, and based on the pattern I had discovered, I expected this ship or the next would have the discrepancy between the freight weight and bill of lading.
