I could wait until tomorrow and reconcile the records, but I was anxious for information and wanted to know if my theory would check out. So I needed to go to the docks and check the papers myself.

I looked at my watch.

Three hours until the ship’s arrival, which was plenty of time to go home, change, grab a bite to eat, and be there to meet as it docked.

I finished up my office, energized and excited, the angst of my earlier conversation with my father barely a memory.

What it said about me that I was excited about meeting a cargo ship at a dock was something I chose not to consider.

Instead, I went home, gobbled down dinner, changed, and headed to the port. As I drove toward the docks, I kept telling myself that I was overreacting, being stupid. I was more than halfway convinced I wouldn’t find anything.

That was what the rational part of my brain was telling me.

But in my gut, I knew there was something.

What?

I couldn’t say for sure. But I planned to find out.

I made it to the docks with surprising ease and parked.

I wasn’t sure what I had been expecting, but certainly not this.

The place looked deserted, was eerily quiet, and incredibly dark.

There was a hint of something churning in my gut, trepidation it felt like, but I ignored it.

There was nothing to be afraid of. I had my company ID and had every right to be here.

So, walking with a confidence I didn’t feel in the slightest, I made my way down to the slip where the ship was docked.

Froze when I saw Josh.
