Davit

As I left her place,I felt energized, alive in a way I rarely did.

It wasn’t all that surprising.

From the very first, Amethyst had fascinated me.

I just knew there was so much more to her than what she showed the world, and it intrigued me.

But I hadn’t explored that, hadn’t really given it more than an occasional thought. My focus had been singular, and besides, showing interest in her beyond ordinary friendliness might have jeopardized my mission.

And I wouldn’t allow that.

Not ever.

But now, things were different.

I checked my surroundings before I got into the SUV, an old habit that I hadn’t been able to shake and probably never would.

As I drove, I thought about what would change between us now that she knew who I was.

Thought about what I knew I should have done to her.

She knew something she shouldn’t know, which should have meant automatic death.

Would have if she had been anyone else.

As I’d driven to her place, I’d contemplated my options, not that I really had any.

Killing her was the easiest and smartest play.

But before I’d even formed the thought, I rejected it, rebelled at the very idea.

Amethyst was one of the rarest kinds of people I had ever encountered.

A true innocent.

And that still meant something. Or at least I hoped it did.

But of course, I couldn’t pretend that saving her had been entirely altruistic.

Truth was, I wanted her to know who I was. Wanted to drop the pretense between us.

I wasn’t sure why, not entirely, but I suspected that if I was myself, my true self, she would be too.

And I wanted that.

The real Amethyst.

I parked in front of Josh Kelley’s place, a bland, cookie-cutter townhouse.

Not too expensive, not cheap.

Totally nondescript, boring. Just like I wanted it to be.

I went in, the hairs on the back of my neck rising.
