Davit laughed. “Well, I know how hard Amy works to put them together. I figured showing my face was the least I could do before I got back to work. Speaking of…”

Keenan waved him away. “Yeah, man. See you later.”

Davit’s eyes narrowed ever so slightly, but then he nodded and walked away.

His absence was immediately felt, but I was grateful for it.

As he walked away, my heartbeat started to slow, that alertness that always had me on edge when he was around fading ever so slightly.

“Do you need a hand?” Keenan asked.

I tilted my head and looked at him curiously, wondering at his offer. It wasn’t like Keenan to be helpful, not without expecting something in return.

“I think I have everything in order,” I said.

“Nah. Let me help you out,” he argued.

“Well, we’re only scheduled for about thirty more minutes, so there’s really nothing for you to do,” I said.

I had been grateful for Keenan, but now that Davit was gone, I’d be just as happy if he was too.

“It’s no problem. I’ll keep you company,” he said.

How fucking awesome.

I kept the thought to myself and instead smiled at the people who came and went.

The thirty minutes passed quickly, and the atrium began to empty. Soon, it was only Keenan and me.

“Let me help you with that,” he said as I went to grab the trash.

I looked at him quizzically but didn’t say anything.

Instead, I worked to clear the atrium and discard the trash.

“I think that’s everything,” Keenan said.

I looked at him again, trying to figure out what was going on. He wanted something and probably thought that charming me was the way to get it.

Not that he had the ability to do so anymore.

I smiled, and Keenan returned it.

“You’ve always had the most beautiful smile,” he said.

I said nothing, but he followed as I got into the elevator and pushed the button for my floor.

“You know, Amy, you really are great. You make everyone’s day a little bit brighter,” he said.

The elevator dinged and I got off. “Thank you,” I called over my shoulder.

He was a step behind me as he continued. “I’m serious. You just have a wonderful spirit. Such great energy,” he said.

“Thanks,” I repeated.

I looked back at him, certain that my face was twisted given how perplexed I was. But if he noticed, he gave no indication.

Instead, he continued down the hall and followed me into my office.
