But I didn’t care about that now.

All I cared about was getting inside, away from everything.

Maybe with rest and space, I’d gain some insight that was eluding me now.

No sooner had I closed and locked the door than I heard a buzz telling me someone was approaching.

I took a quick peek at the camera and saw Davit standing on my doorstep.

I reacted to him physically, something I had come to accept was unavoidable.

But my gut churned, and the headache that had only been starting to brew hit full force.

I yanked open the door. “I had a long day. I’m not in the mood for company.”

He looked at me then stepped forward, and stepped forward again, leaving me with no choice but to back up or be run over.

I snorted as I stepped out of the way, the truth of that thought not lost on me.

He had been running me over for years; I just hadn’t known it.

“What’s so funny?” he asked.

“Not a damn thing,” I responded. “What do you want?”

He looked at me for a moment, and I expected him to say something.

But he didn’t.

Instead, he pushed the door closed, then kept his hand on it, his body angled so that I was trapped between the door, the wall, and him.

The urge to hug him, to throw my arms around him, was almost undeniable.

On the upside, if I did it, it would only be the second dumbest thing I’d done today.

But I stayed still and tried my best to keep all emotion off my face.

“You’ve been avoiding me,” he said.

“What gives you that idea?”

“Don’t play coy, Amethyst.”

“Maybe I don’t want to see you. Did you consider that?”

“I did,” he said, lowering his gaze to rove over my body before meeting my eyes again. “But we both know that’s not true.”

“Well,” I said, my voice a little bit lower than I had intended, “obviously it is true. If I’m avoiding you, it’s because I don’t want to see you.”

“Fine. We’ll pretend that you don’t want to see me. But you can’t avoid me anymore,” he said.

“Why not?” I tilted my head, waiting for a response.

“That would be a change. Amy and Josh are buddies. If that changes, people will notice. And if people notice, they’ll ask questions. And you don’t want anyone asking questions.”

“No, you don’t want anyone asking questions,” I countered.

“I don’t. And, as we have already discussed, my desires and yours are intertwined.”
