EIGHTEEN

Davit

I checked on Amethyst.

I had no doubt it was stress that had made her black out, but I was reassured when I felt her steady pulse, her even breath.

After I was sure she was okay, I looked at the intruder, my plans for him developing. He was out cold, but sadly for him, he wouldn’t be for long.

I pulled my phone from my pocket and dialed quickly.

“I need a cleanup and safe location,” I said when the phone was answered.

I gave the address and was sure that this entire scene would be spotless in under an hour.

Then I turned my attention to the intruder. I pulled off his mask and studied him.

He had a tattoo on his wrist, but no other marks that I could see. And I didn’t recognize his face.

I made makeshift handcuffs out of his belt and shoelaces. When I was done, I looked back at Amethyst.

She was still out, so I took the risk.

As quickly as I could move without drawing too much suspicion, I went to the silver sedan and gave it a quick look.

Nothing out of the ordinary, not even a bottle of water or a can.

I guessed this was a rental, but there was no identifying information in it.

I’d have my men take a look at it, but I didn’t expect them to find anything.

I made it back in less than three minutes, and then dampened a cloth and went to Amethyst.

“Wake up,” I said, my voice stern but hopefully not too alarming.

I wiped her face with the cloth and then held it against her neck.

“Amethyst! Wake up,” I repeated when she didn’t move.

She started to stir and then opened her eyes, which were wide with fear.

“It’s okay. You’re all right,” I said, trying my best to soothe her.

Not something I was good at. Not by a long shot. But it seemed to work.

She had been breathing rapidly, but her breath slowed, and the tight grip that she had on my forearm loosened ever so slightly.

“Is he…?”

“He’s alive but unconscious. Don’t think about him. He’ll be taken care of,” I said.

Some emotion passed over her face at my words, but then she looked at me expectantly.

She didn’t know what she was doing, at least not consciously, but in that moment, she was trusting me, relying on me.

I wouldn’t let her down.

I ignored the feeling in my chest at that realization and focused on her.
