NINETEEN

Davit

“Amethyst, I—”

I was anxious to speak with her, but I cut off when I saw her lying in my bed.

She looked to be sleeping deeply, and I lingered for a moment, just staring at her.

Realized I liked her there.

Bringing her here had been beyond stupid, but it felt right.

I couldn’t let myself think about that.

I had questions to ask her, but they could wait.

I left a note on the back of the front door and then went to work.

I drove by Amethyst’shouse and saw that on the outside, all was good.

I’d received pictures that had shown the place wiped clean, but I wanted to check myself.

There been no saving the curio cabinet, but the man and all evidence of the struggle were gone.

It would be easy enough to explain away the cabinet being gone if it came to that, but I had a suspicion that whoever had sent the man certainly wouldn’t be calling the police to look into his disappearance.

I drove past her house twice more, and when I was satisfied that everything was in place, I headed to Elias’s.

He was waiting, pulling the door open before I even knocked.

“What’s the trouble?” he asked.

It was nearly three in the morning, but I knew he hadn’t been sleeping.

“You look like you need rest, brother,” I said.

He snorted. “How the fuck could I rest?”

“Tough day at the office?” I said.

“Yeah, one that you’re only making tougher,” he replied.

“I had nothing to do with this,” I said, the suspicion I’d been fighting to keep at bay coming up.

“It sounds like you’re about to suggest that I’m behind this, but you wouldn’t do that,” he said, sounding bored, though I knew that could shift to anger in a flash.

“Wouldn’t I?” I said.

“I hope not. Because if nothing else, you know I wouldn’t allow my men to leave a job incomplete.”

“I know,” I said, the anger that had been brewing deflating as quickly as it had risen. Elias wouldn’t do a half-assed job, and I hadn’t suspected him, not really.

The attack at Amethyst’s wasn’t his style, and at the very least, he would have given me a heads-up.

“So who do you think it was?” he asked.

I shrugged. “I didn’t recognize the face. Didn’t see any tattoos of note.”
