“So not bratva?”
“I’d say no. Maybe cartel,” I responded.
“That doesn’t fit,” Elias said.
“It doesn’t, but you know some of their guys freelance.”
“Sure, but why that particular target?”
I didn’t miss the significance of what he was asking. Understood it all too well.
“That’s the question, isn’t it?” I finally said.
“I thought you had this in hand, Davit.” His voice was heavy with accusation, and I deserved all of it.
“So did I,” I finally responded.
“Are you saying you don’t?” He tilted his head, a look I’d seen so many times before.
“I do. We’ve brought in more shipments without a hitch, and Amethyst hasn’t breathed a word to anyone.”
“Then who would pay to get rid of her?” Elias asked.
“I don’t know,” I said.
“But you’ll find out,” Elias interjected.
“I will,” I responded, my voice firm.
He studied me for a moment, and I knew he didn’t like what he saw.
“What’s going on between you two?” He sounded weary and annoyed in that way only my brother could. I couldn’t help but smile.
“What makes you think there’s something going on?”
“What? I’m supposed to believe you were so on top of business that you made it to her place just in time to save her?”
“Yup.”
“And I’m also supposed to believe you chose to save her instead of allowing what could become a problem to be eliminated while maintaining plausible deniability?”
“Yup,” I responded, trying to keep my voice even.
Elias was goading me, but I wouldn’t give him the satisfaction of showing too much emotion, thereby proving his point.
“As long as your dick isn’t causing trouble for my business,” he said.
“Why don’t you let me worry about my dick, and you worry about yours,” I said.
“Fine, but Davit, know that I’m only giving you this leeway because you’re my brother.”
“And not because I’ve earned it?” I asked.
He scoffed. “Just make sure this doesn’t become a bigger issue,” he said.
“And the man?” I asked
“Safely stored and awaiting interrogation,” he said.
