“What did you find?”

“Nothing,” Narek, one of the family’s top lieutenants, said.

I paced the floor for probably the millionth time and stopped in front of the bank of computers to stare at him.

“What do you mean, nothing?”

Narek was tough; he had to be to survive. But I could see he wanted to recoil from me.

I understood.

It had been two weeks since I’d found that letter.

Two of the longest, most tortured weeks of my life. And despite everything I’d done, I was no closer to finding Amethyst.

I was on edge, close to the breaking point. I had to pull myself together.

For Amethyst.

And for our baby.

Narek opened and closed his mouth, clearly considering what to say. He looked relieved when his phone vibrated.

“Barev,” he said into the phone, shifting slightly so he wasn’t facing me.

He nodded and then hung up the phone.

“What is it?” I asked.

He shrugged. “Maybe nothing, but we found her car.”

“That’s not nothing. Where?” I asked, grinding out the words, trying to project patience I didn’t feel.

This was the first possibly significant piece of information I’d found, but my gut—and my experience—told me finding her wouldn’t be simple.

“A little over a hundred miles away, right near the state line,” Narek said.

“That far,” I said, more to myself than Narek.

Or was it?

That was no distance at all, especially for this length of time. But I had to consider what it meant.

She’d left her car.

Or had she been forced to leave it?

Was she in danger?

I started pacing again.

Narek cleared his throat, and I stopped and looked at him.

“What else?” I asked.
