“The keys were in the cup holder. Her wallet with her ID, cash, and credit cards were sitting on the seat.”

“Basically begging someone to steal them,” I supplied.

Narek nodded. “Yes. It’s a miracle they were still there.”

“When was it found?” I asked.

“It was spotted about one-thirty yesterday morning. The men watched it all night to see if anyone would go to it,” he said.

“Smart.” I nodded.

But I shouldn’t have been surprised. Our men were some of the best, and they, unlike me, wouldn’t go off half cocked.

“So they didn’t see anything else?” I asked.

He shook his head. “No. They’re going over the security footage now.”

“And?” I asked, recognizing his expectant face.

He cleared his throat, and I couldn’t help but smile. Narek could be a stone killer, if necessary, but he’d never be good at cards.

“Have you considered that she left on her own? That she doesn’t want to be found?” he asked.

He went quiet after he said that, and I knew that he was nervous, was probably reluctant to question me about anything, especially with how I’d been acting. But he’d done it anyway.

That spoke well of him.

Following orders was an essential part of the family, but so was knowing when to speak out.

That Narek seemed to be able to navigate the two that told me I was right to think highly of him.

And right to trust him with the things most precious to me.

“I have,” I finally said, giving voice to the thing that I had wanted to deny.

The thing I knew to be true.

She’d heard me with her father, knew what I had kept from her.

And she’d run.

I hated that, was angry that she hadn’t given me a chance to explain.

If she’d just stayed calm, let me explain, she would have been upset, but…

But what?

She’d trust me?

Then she, me, and the baby could become the family I’d never known I wanted?

I clenched my fists, needing to do something with the emotion that was coursing through me.

A fucking fantasy was what that was, but I’d deserved a chance to try.

She’d taken that from me.

Or had she?
