I told myself it didn’t matter.

That he, like me, had been taken in by Keenan’s charm. He didn’t know what kind of man he really was, and I certainly wasn’t going to tell him.

He wouldn’t believe me, so what would be the point?

None.

“Do you need me—”

He shook his head quickly, cutting me off. “I’ll be fine, Amy. What are you about to do?”

“I was going to head home,” I said.

Knew instantly that was the wrong answer.

“If you wouldn’t mind finishing up the monthly reports before you do,” he said.

“Of course not,” I whispered, not bothering to mention he’d given everyone else the rest of the day off.

I didn’t linger, and instead made my way to my office.

At least I could throw myself into work, and the unfairness of all of this was something I could ignore, at least for a little while longer.

I finished well after dark, and was relieved when I was finally headed home.

I took that as a victory.

In the days since Keenan had died, I’d felt almost nothing.

I knew that was just my mind’s way of coping, of trying to process something that was impossible to process.

But I hated that feeling, the detachment.

Even wished I could be sad.

Wished I could feel something.

But there was nothing.

I got home and was looking forward to relaxing.

Had just sat on my couch when I heard a knock at the door.

I answered, wondering who it could be.

Only when I pulled it open did I realize how foolish I had been.

Of course it was him.

“I’m not in the mood for company,” I said when I saw Davit’s face.

“Okay,” he responded.

I felt a moment’s relief, one that was quickly cut short when he walked in. I looked at him, annoyed, but not all surprised.

“You know that usually means that you should leave,” I said.

“I know,” he said as he pushed the door closed behind him.
