“Two sisters and four nephews. Some great-nephews and nieces as well.”

“No husband or kids?”

“No. I never married or had children. Is that a problem?”

“Is it?” he countered.

“Well, not for me,” she said.

I laughed, but Davit didn’t give an inch.

“I hear an accent. Where are you from originally?”

“Jamaica. We moved to London when I was a young adult. And then moved to Switzerland when my sister and her oldest son came,” she said.

“And the last family you worked for?”

“I was with them for thirteen years. The father got a promotion and the family relocated to New York.”

“From what I gather, that was nearly two years ago. No other family since then?” Davit asked.

“I haven’t found anyone that was a good fit,” she said.

She was standing up to Davit’s questioning well. She wasn’t tense, wasn’t defensive at all.

But even more, I sensed a warmth in her.

Could I trust that?

I didn’t know, but I decided I would try.

Paulette looked at me. “Any questions from you, ma’am?”

“Amy,” I said.

“Amy,” she repeated, smiling.

“I think Davit has covered everything,” I said.

“In that case,” she said, standing, “you have my information. Feel free to reach out if you have any more questions.”

“It was great to meet you, Paulette,” I said.

“You too, Amy,” she said. “And Davit.”

She went to the door, which opened immediately, and Erik escorted her out.

We waited a few moments, then Davit looked at me.

“Well?” he said.

“Well?” I countered.

“Her story checks out. Her background is squeaky clean. She got a speeding ticket fifteen years ago. Nothing since then. Not active on social media, thank God, and all of her relatives are clean. The two sisters are retirees. The nephews work in various corporate jobs. The great-nephews and nieces are still in grade school,” he said.

“What about her parents and grandparents?” I asked, arching a brow.

“All deceased. I believe they were buried in—” He stopped, then smiled.

“You looked into her before she even came?”

“I looked into them all before they came.”

“That shouldn’t surprise me, but what do you think?”

“I like her,” he said.

I smiled, feeling a rush of excitement.

“I do too.”
