“Have the plans been finalized?”

“Yes. Father will be released in a few months. After that, he’ll have three months of home confinement,” Elias said.

“And then?” I asked.

“God fucking help us,” he muttered.

“What do you need from me?” I asked.

I knew this was tense for Elias, knew that my father’s release, while something that we had fought hard for, and something that we would celebrate, was going to be a difficult time for him.

My father, never a patient or particularly thoughtful man, would feel particularly obligated to assert himself. So Elias would have a difficult tightrope to walk.

And I knew he was insulating me from that, something that I appreciated, but something I tried to remind him wasn’t necessary.

“I need you to get the fuck out of here and go check on Amethyst,” he said.

He gave me a smile that was genuine, and though he had never said so, I knew he was excited about the baby’s birth.

“Any day now,” I said.

“Yeah, that’s why you need to get out of here,” he said.

“Okay,” I responded, not even pretending to put up a fight.

I hated to leave her for any length of time, and though I knew Paulette was with her, I still wanted to be there.

“You call me if there’s news,” he said.

“Okay,” I responded.

The drive back home was uneventful, except for the fact that I realized it was just that.

Home.

I had houses all over Europe, had grown up here and there, but other than the bond with my brother, I’d never had anything like a home. A place that I looked forward to going back to.

And while my father had loved us as best he could, and the only way he knew how, there still hadn’t been anything like nurturing or affection.

I didn’t blame him for it, knew that he was preparing us for the world the only way he knew how.

But to think that I had that now, a place that I could go to that was mine, with people that I loved…

And I did love her.

I hadn’t been able to say it out loud to her yet, but I knew it, knew that she and the baby were my beating heart.

I hadn’t built up the courage to say it, but knew that I would.

“Amethyst?” I called as I came in.

“In the kitchen,” she said.

I went in and found her standing at the stove.
