“Amethyst, why would I buy you a ring?”

“I’m not at my best right now, so can you spell it out for me?” she said.

I sat next to her, pulled her close with one arm around her shoulder.

“Because I want to be married too,” I said.

I’d been thinking that for months, but hadn’t had the courage to say the words.

“You do?” Her brow furrowed. “Oh, of course you do,” she said.

I frowned. “What does that mean?”

“I don’t know much about your business, culture, and religion, but I could imagine having little bastards running around is not a good look,” she said.

“Don’t ever refer to my child that way. And this has nothing to do with my business, my religion, or my culture.”

“Then what?”

I smiled at her, then pressed my lips against hers in a hard kiss.

“You’re a very intelligent woman. I think you can figure it out.”

“Why don’t you tell me?” she said.

“I love you.”

“What?” she said.

“I love you. I know I should have said it sooner. I’ve been trying to figure out a way to say it. But in light of this conversation, it feels like just saying it is what I should do. So I am. I love you, and I want to be married to you.”

“And not just because of the baby?” she asked.

“No. Because of you,” I said.

“Because of me,” she responded with a soft smile.

“Yeah. Now let me put this ring on you,” I said with a smile.
