“Forget I said that,” she said.

“Why?”

“Because it’s stupid,” she whispered.

“Why do you say that?”

“I mean, we’re together, right?” She sounded tentative and unsure in a way that ripped at my chest.

“Is that even a question?” I finally responded.

“I guess not. So we’re together. We are—hard as it is to believe—happy. At least I think we’re happy?”

“We’re happy,” I said.

She nodded. “So my silly girlhood fantasies don’t matter. Not when what I have here, right now, is so wonderful.”

“Tell me what you mean?”

“I mean, you know I always wanted a big family since I was little. Lots of kids,” she said.

I nodded.

She had told me about that, and I’d confessed that I’d wanted no such thing. Had felt that I was ill-equipped to handle it. I hadn’t yet told her how she had managed to change my mind.

“As a part of that, I always imagined a partner. A husband. This big happy family. Together. The unit bonded and bound,” she said.

She went quiet, seeming to consider before she looked at me again.

“But we’re together. And that’s enough,” she said.

She didn’t sound convinced, but I didn’t try to convince her.

Instead, I stood and started to walk away.

“You’re leaving now?” she said, her disbelief clear.

“Just wait,” I said as I walked away.

“I am not moving too fast these days, but if you don’t hurry up, I’m going to come and find you,” she called.

“Be patient, Amethyst,” I said as I went to the study.

I found what I was looking for, and then returned to her.

I handed her the box, and she took it, looked at it, then looked at me.

“Open up,” I said.

She did and then she looked back up at me. “A ring?”

“Yeah. I bought it a couple of months ago,” I said.

“For me?” she asked, blinking.

“No. For Paulette. Of course for you,” I chided.

She smiled. “Why did you buy me a ring?”
