Amethyst

“There you go. There you go,”I said, whispering, trying to keep my excitement at bay.

Crystal was going to latch this time. I could feel it.

And she did, but the moment of elation I felt immediately dissipated, became that familiar frustration that had plagued me for a week now.

I briefed it out, and tried again.

“Come on, sweetie,” I said, trying to coax Crystal.

She was hungry. I could tell from the cries that were growing ever more insistent. But she wouldn’t latch. Not for long, anyway.

It was the same battle, one that seemed ceaseless, but one that I suspected I was not going to win.

“Is she latching?” Davit asked.

I’d been trying to ignore him, but felt an unfair, and incredibly intense, stab of irritation.

“She will,” I said, keeping my voice calm, or at least I hoped it was.

“You can do it, sweetie,” he said, stroking one of her feet.

“Maybe give us some space,” I said, my voice tight. “Sorry,” I added quickly, when I saw the wounded look cross his face.

“It’s no problem. Is there anything I can do?” he had asked.

The same question he had asked probably a million times. And I gave him the same answer.

“No. We’ll figure it out,” I said.

I felt guilty. I knew that he was only trying to help. I could only imagine if he felt one-tenth as frustrated as I did how horrible that was.

I gave him what I hoped was a reassuring smile.

When I looked at him, though, nothing in his expression suggested it was.

“It’s okay, Amethyst. It’s fine,” he said.

His attempts to reassure me only made me want to cry.

This was easy, probably the easiest part of being a mother.

All I had to do was give my baby food.

But that simple task, one that had been occurring since the beginning of humanity, was one that escaped me.

Just like the single tear that rolled down my cheek.

I wiped it away in frustration, and looked at Davit when I heard him approach.

Something in my gaze froze him in place, and I was glad he didn’t try to make me feel better.

How could he?

To think I’d only been a mother less than a month, and I was already failing.
