“Do you ever think about it?” I asked.

“Think about what?” he responded.

I shrugged. “You know, kids?”

“God no. I guess it’s my duty to keep the line going. But I don’t know that I have what it takes to be a father. Don’t know that I want to have what it takes,” he said.

“Did Father?” I asked.

“I don’t know if he even has the self-awareness to ask himself the question. Not that I would ever disrespect my father, but I am aiming a little bit higher,” he said.

And I understood.

I thought I got it before, but seeing Crystal, holding her in my arms, it made things different. Added a weight of responsibility that I didn’t think I was prepared for, didn’t think there was any way you could prepare for it.

But one thing was undeniably certain, and that was that I would do everything in my power to protect her, give her the life that she deserved.

And I knew Elias felt the same.

“Pardon me,” Kayla said as she pushed open the door.

“What?” Elias responded.

“It looks like you have a visitor,” she said.

“Who?” Elias asked, instantly on alert.

“Isaac Sargasyan,” she said.

I looked at Elias, confused.

“I don’t know what this is about either. Make him wait ten minutes, then I’ll come get them,” he said to Kayla.

She nodded and then left.

“I wonder what this is about?” I said.

“I guess we’ll find out soon enough, though Isaac does like to keep things interesting,” he said.

I heard two knocks, which was a signal to Elias that Isaac had arrived.

After exactly ten minutes, Elias stood, and I followed him to the office door.

Found Isaac standing next to Kayla’s desk.

Elias frowned, doing something he rarely did, and giving away his displeasure.

“Isaac,” he said coolly, the tone of his voice completely at odds with the expression that had been on his face just moments ago.

He glared at Kayla, then nodded toward the office door.

Isaac followed, a little grin on his face.

He walked in and sat, and Elias looked at him expectantly.

“Are you going to tell me where you found your secretary now?” Isaac asked.

Elias again glared a little harder than usual, and I saw him fight to bring himself under control. Knew that Isaac hadn’t missed it either.
