But I didn’t say anything.

Knew that interjecting here would be an admission of weakness, and that was something Elias didn’t want.

Elias stared at Isaac but said nothing.

After a moment, Isaac shifted his attention to me, a subtle, but meaningful concession to Elias.

“I’m glad that you’re here, Davit,” he said.

“And why is that, Isaac?”

“The business I’m here about today involves you,” he said.

“And what business is that?” Elias asked.

Elias had recovered completely, but I knew him well enough to know that he was still annoyed.

“Raphael James.”

“What about him?” I said.

“How reliable is he?” Isaac asked.

“Why are you asking?”

“Well, I’m sure you’re aware—in fact, I know you’re aware—that we’re considering pursuing some business with him.”

“And I told you that was no concern of mine,” Elias said.

Isaac nodded. “Yes, but I was hoping for more insight into the man. He seems new to this but has taken on a lot. I want to know if he is reliable,” Isaac said.

“You came here for information about business that you stole from me, for all intents and purposes,” Elias said.

“That’s one way to characterize it,” Isaac responded.

“And how would you characterize it?”

“I characterize it as you passing up an opportunity that my family didn’t.”

“And now you take this opportunity and come to me for even more?”

“Just friendly communication. My hope is that I could get a better understanding of what I might expect from Mr. James. But it seems like I was mistaken,” Isaac said.

Elias said nothing, neither correcting him nor disregarding what he had said.

“Well, I guess I’ll do what’s best,” Isaac said. “Congratulations on the daughter, Davit.”

I gave no reaction, but I knew this was a test.

The idea of keeping Crystal a secret was ridiculous, not when everyone stayed on top of what everyone else was doing.

But what I couldn’t determine was whether Isaac’s words were a threat or not.

Either way, I couldn’t overreact.

Instead, I said nothing, and after a long moment, Isaac nodded and then stood.

“You should call that secretary to walk me out.
