“If you need anything…” I said over my shoulder.

“Amy, I know exactly what to do, and I know how to reach you if necessary. It will be fine,” Paulette said.

I laughed. “Okay. No one else say that.”

Paulette and Davit laughed, and I threw on a light jacket.

He grabbed my hand and interlaced his fingers with mine.

“I thought we should walk,” he said.

“That’s a great idea,” I responded.

We left the house, and though I missed Crystal, I allowed myself to enjoy this rare free moment.

It was the first time we had left her since she was born, and as we got farther away from the house, I was reminded of how good of an idea this actually was.

“This is nice,” he whispered, wrapping one arm around my shoulder.

“It is,” I responded.

“I’m glad we decided to do it,” he said.

“Me too,” I responded.

I stiffened for a moment, and he looked at me, with question in his eyes.

“This hasn’t been too hard on you, has it?”

He frowned at me, then shook his head.

“I’ve been more worried about the two of you. Maybe too worried,” he confessed.

I understood.

It had been a rough couple of weeks in the beginning, me trying to learn how to feed her and dealing with some of the physical fallout of her birth.

Davit had been a rock throughout, and had never voiced even a hint of complaint.

“I’m sorry. I haven’t been considerate of you,” I whispered.

He rubbed my hand.

“Don’t even think it. Just take care of yourself and take care of her. I can take care of me,” he said.

My throat was thick with emotion, so I didn’t speak.

Instead, I enjoyed the time with him, the walk through the city so much more meaningful now.

In the crazy months since Crystal had been born, I hadn’t really stopped to think, but tonight I did.

Part of me— a big part—couldn’t believe that this was actually my life.

The child that I had dreamed of.

A man, while unexpected, as loving and considerate of a husband as I ever could have hoped for.

“Through all the shit, I managed to get lucky,” I whispered.
