Amethyst

Three months later

“She’ll be fine,”Davit said.

“I know,” I responded, but I made no move to put Crystal down.

He looked at me, patient, indulgent, and I couldn’t help but smile.

“What?”

“You’re holding on to her like you’re never going to let her go,” he said.

“I don’t want to,” I responded, staring down at her face.

She looked up at me with Davit’s eyes, and though she didn’t give me one of the smiles she seemed to lavish on him, I still felt that same warmth and love that I did every time I looked at her.

After all these weeks, I would have thought that feeling would have lessened, but it had only grown stronger.

“We talked about this, Amethyst,” he said.

I stood and reached out my arms, and he quickly took her.

I watched as he stared down at her in awe, knowing that he felt the same way that I did.

After a moment, he looked to me as he gently bounced her.

“We’re only going to be gone for four hours. She’ll be fine.”

“I know,” I said, though I still made no effort to move.

“This was your idea,” he added.

“I know,” I responded.

This time I started to walk, but not with the speed I had anticipated.

He stopped beside me, and reached out his free arm to gently hug me around the shoulders.

“You need this. We need this,” he said.

“I know,” I responded. I laughed. “I’m going to say something different. It’s just…”

“I know. Leaving her doesn’t feel great, but she’ll be fine, and we have to do this at some point,” he said.

“I don’t like this,” I said, narrowing my eyes at him.

“What’s that?”

“You being the voice of reason,” I said.

He just gave me a quick smile, and then turned to walk toward Paulette.

“It’s good that you’re going to get out. Enjoy yourself,” she said.

She took the baby, and I brushed a hand over her soft curls, but then turned to leave.
