Davit

“We should get back,”I said.

“We should,” Amethyst responded, though she made no attempt to move.

I understood why.

If she was feeling anything like I did, leaving was the last thing on her mind.

But still, after a moment, she got up.

“This was wonderful, Davit,” she said after she had put on her dress.

“It was,” I responded, standing to hug her before dressing myself.

I knew that this time, while wonderful, had been difficult too.

Amethyst hadn’t said anything, but I knew she doubted herself, worried that she wasn’t being the best possible mother she could be for Crystal.

I knew that was nonsense, but knew there was nothing I could tell her that would make her believe me.

Instead, I tried to support her, encourage her.

Be there for her.

Not like I had any idea how to do those things, but I gave it my best, watched as each day she grew into the kind of mother my daughter deserved. The kind of mother she wanted to be.

It made me happy, happier than anything else ever had.

“It’s silly,” she said as we got on the elevator.

“What’s that?”

“I miss her. I can’t wait to see her little chubby cheeks,” she said.

“Me, either,” I responded. “But why is that silly?”

“Because Paulette is holding her, and you know Paulette is her favorite person in the world. She hasn’t given us a thought,” Amethyst said.

“Oh, your baby knows her mama. I’m sure she missed you just as much as you missed her,” I said.

“Not possible,” Amethyst responded with a bright smile.

We had left in late afternoon, and it was now early evening.

We walked back to the house, looking at the streets.

I reflected on how little time had passed in the grand scheme of things, but how much had changed.

I had a family now.

People who made life real.

People who made all of the things I did worth something. Gave every day a sense of happiness and purpose that hadn’t been there before.

My entire life I had been driven to prove myself, prove that I was a worthy addition to the family.
