Prove that I had value.

That had given me purpose, focus, drive.

But what I had now…

There was nothing that could compare. I had been willing to die for the Petrosyan family, for our reputation, for our business.

I would do the same for Amethyst, for Crystal, in a split second. But even more, I would be eager to, would give anything and everything for them, including my life.

Because I had existed before, but until they entered my life, I hadn’t really been living.

I smiled at Amethyst, then squeezed her hand.

She smiled at me, and then looked around as we continued to walk.

I didn’t have security, preferring to leave all the men at the house with Crystal. I was confident I could take care of anything that might confront me.

Fortunately, there had been nothing.

Zürich was quiet, but my father’s release was growing ever closer, and there had been rumblings.

Nothing serious, but I knew that this carefree time wouldn’t last. I had even considered relocating Amethyst and Crystal, but then dismissed the idea.

I wanted them close by, and wouldn’t make any other arrangements unless I absolutely had to.

And besides, she would argue with me, and I’d rather not worry her.

We turned the block, and I looked at the house, remembering the first day I’d seen it. I had known instantly that it was the place for us, but had been worried about convincing her.

That Amethyst had fallen in love with it so quickly had given me a confidence that hadn’t been there before. And I’d slowly grown to believe that we could build a life together. A real one.

This night felt like another step on that journey, one that I knew would bring me happiness I didn’t deserve.

As we approached the house, I slowed, then stopped, staring at it.

“What is it?” she asked.

She had a light smile on her face, but as she stared at me, I noticed it drop.

The men always stayed out of sight. There weren’t many neighbors around, but I never liked to call attention.

But still, there were always men at the opposite corners of the street out of sight of prying eyes, but where I could see them.

Those men weren’t there now.

I started to walk again, mind racing as I tried to process the scene in front of me.

That didn’t necessarily mean anything. My men were discreet, moved around to make sure they didn’t draw any undue attention. So the absence wasn’t necessarily meaningful.

But still, I was on alert, and found myself walking more swiftly.

Amethyst looked at me, and the smile that had been on her face was only a distant memory.

Instead, she walked quickly, though she didn’t speak.

She was calm for the moment, and I hoped she would stay that way.

The alarm that I had managed to keep at bay kicked up a notch when I walked to the front door.
