I looked back down, saw that blood had started to pool underneath him, but just as quickly looked away.

Then looked back, realized that something was under him.

Paulette.

Wearing the outfit of jeans and a cardigan that she did almost every day.

Saw that the ivory sweater was now a dull pink.

Didn’t allow myself to think about the reason why.

I looked again, this time giving up any pretense of calm.

I felt like I was outside of myself, watching as I moved my hand away from Davit and ran into the room.

Threw the covers off the bed, looked under it, looked in the closet, the bathroom.

Looked in all of them again.

Then ran through every other room of the house, leaving nothing but disaster in my wake.

But could I call it that?

Disaster? Some tossed over furniture, strewn-about clothes?

That wasn’t a disaster, not when the unthinkable had happened.

Davit had been one step behind me the entire way, and when the reality I couldn’t avoid started to sink in, I finally looked at him.

Almost broke when I saw the same panic in his eyes that I felt in my heart.

I grabbed his shirt, the expensive fabric crinkling in my grasp.

I didn’t look away from his eyes, didn’t blink, just squeezed his shirt tighter, tighter.

So tight that I could feel the seams start to give.

I didn’t care.

There was only one thing that mattered.

Only one question that I needed answered.

“Davit, where is my baby?”
