Although my voice didn’t change, the emotion that surged through me was nearly overwhelming.

I stared at her, then crossed to her, pulled her against me in a hard hug.

She stiffened, but didn’t try to pull away, and after a moment I let her go.

I didn’t look at her, and instead listened as she walked into the bathroom, ashamed of my uncharacteristic display of emotion.

But I was so relieved that she was here that I couldn’t care too much.

She really was here.

I’d found her.

And in a few short months, I would have a child.

It was so much, but not in a bad way.

When she returned, she stopped in the entryway of the bathroom and said, “I’m ready to go.”

“Okay. I’ll be just a moment,” I said.

I went to the bathroom, changed, and joined her less than ten minutes later.

She had sat down in a chair near the floor-to-ceiling windows, and was looking out.

“I guess I shouldn’t even bother to ask how you got me into this country with no passport.”

“It’s no mystery. My family and I have certain resources.”

“And I guess I shouldn’t ask what this appointment is, either?”

“It’s with the preeminent obstetrician in the country.”

“I told you I had been getting prenatal care,” she said.

“The appointment is in ten minutes,” I responded.

She stood and started to walk toward the door.

I stared at her quizzically.

“You’re not going to argue?”

She stopped then and, turned her eyes to me, the sadness in their depths making my heart twist.

“Would it make a difference if I did?” she asked.

“No,” I responded.

It sounded harsh, but it was honest.

Amethyst needed to understand that when it came to certain things, there was no negotiation.

This was one of them.

She shrugged. “Then why waste the breath? We should go. We don’t want to keep the doctor waiting.”
