“Just a few more questions, and then we can take a look,” Dr. Mueller said.

“Of course,” Amethyst said.

She had been forthcoming, even cooperative, and I wondered why.

But mostly, I just listened, taking in information, knowing that nothing would make up for the months that we had been apart, but still eager to know everything that I could.

“And what about your sleep?” Dr. Mueller asked.

“It’s hit or miss. Sometimes I sleep like the dead. Other times, I could be deep asleep and will sit straight up in bed.”

He nodded understandingly. “That’s a hormone rush. As you get through the second trimester, it should start to fade, though the discomfort might not make it that noticeable.”

“It’s fine. I still try to get enough hours, but I don’t get too upset when I don’t.”

“That’s good. And even sitting down and keeping your feet up will help you rest, even if you don’t sleep.”

“Okay,” she said.

“And how is your activity?”

“Well, until this week I was working at a warehouse, so—”

I again felt that anger, and at Dr. Mueller’s stern head shake, I felt validation. “No more of that,” he said.

“I know,” she responded, having the decency to look a little bit guilty.

“I want you to stay active, but don’t overexert yourself, and don’t lift heavy things above your head. Anything bigger than a two-liter bottle is off limits,” he said.

“Understood,” she said.

“Very well. I’d like you to take a baby aspirin every day,” he said.

“Why? I haven’t had any issues with hypertension,” she said.

“Yes, but it’s good to be proactive. Continue with your prenatal vitamin. Limit yourself to a maximum of eight ounces of coffee per day. And you might want to incorporate prunes to keep things moving,” he said.

She laughed. “Thanks, Dr. Mueller.”

“No problem. Now let’s take a look at the baby.”

She smiled, the expression genuine, and then lay back as the doctor squirted gel on her stomach and moved a wand across it.

“Here’s the star of the show,” he said.

“That’s the baby,” I said, sounding like an idiot as I gaped at the screen.

But even though I did, Dr. Mueller smiled. “Yes. Good, strong heartbeat. Everything looks great.”

“Would you like to know the gender?” he asked, looking at me.

I looked at her, but she didn’t say anything.

A beat passed, then another. And then she finally said, “I was kind of hoping for a surprise.”

“Then my lips are sealed,” Dr. Mueller said.
