Jumped up, shocked, when he lay beside me.

“Relax, Amethyst,” he said.

I lay back down, trying to ignore how his closeness affected me.

Couldn’t do that, no matter how hard I tried. I wanted to be distant, told myself that would be the smart play, the only play.

But my heart, my body, resisted. Wanted to melt into him.

And when he pulled me into his arms, I was lost.

I felt safe—happy—and drifted off to sleep faster than I had since the last time he’d held me.

Davit

I missed you.

That was my very first thought upon waking, but I didn’t say the words out loud.

I couldn’t.

I had thought that finding her would be the solution to all my troubles, but I was quickly realizing that finding her was only the first step.

We had a very long way to go to get back to where we had been. And I wanted more than that.

Much more.

So I had to manage things with Amethyst, and even still, that didn’t mean that the rest of the world stopped.

More than anything, I wanted to stay with her. Instead, I got out of bed without waking her, pleased to see she was resting.

I showered, dressed, and left her a note telling her I would be back.

The last was unnecessary, but I wanted to show her that I considered her, wanted her to be happy, or as happy as I could make her.

Which wasn’t very, I was starting to suspect.

But I would do what I could.

I took one of the SUVs from the hotel and drove to Elias’s apartment.

“You’re here very early in the day, brother,” he said.

“Yet here you are fully dressed and with breakfast waiting. Kayla’s doing, no doubt,” I said.

He frowned at the mention of her name, and then called, “Kayla.”

She came from one of the rooms in the back and smiled at me. “Hi, Davit.”

“Hello. Thanks for breakfast,” I said.

“No problem.” Then she frowned and looked at Elias. “What do you want?”

She spoke in a tone I was sure Elias didn’t hear very often, and the angry flash that crossed his face proved the point.

“Get my suits from the tailor and shoes from the cobbler. You also have the list of other tasks I need completed. You should get started,” Elias said.
