Her eyes flashed, and she glared at him. She quickly recovered, though, and gave him a smile so big it was impossible to believe it was authentic. “My pleasure, Elias. Anything you need.”

He’d been trying to get to her, but I knew Kayla could give as good as she got. She held his gaze, but then turned away abruptly and smiled at me, the expression genuine.

“Let me know when you need my help with shopping,” she said.

I nodded, and she left.

Elias watched as she left, his expression intense but unreadable. Then he looked me up and down as I sat at the table across from him.

“You look better,” he said.

“I don’t have to worry about where she is. It’s a weight off my shoulders,” I said.

“I can tell. When do I get to meet her?”

I titled my head. “You get to meet her?”

He placed a hand over his heart. “You wound me, brother.”

“It’s just…”

He waved a hand, dismissing me. “I know. You two have your complicated shit going on. You don’t want to add more to it. I get it,” he said.

“Thank you,” I responded.

There was more I could have said, should have said, because Elias had been invaluable. I wouldn’t have found her without his support.

“Don’t mention it,” he said.

“I wasn’t mentioning anything,” I responded as I took a bite of the fruit salad that was on the table.

“I know. But it’s not necessary to thank your brother for giving you every resource at his disposal to ensure that your child is back where he belongs. You don’t have to mention it,” he said.

“Fine. I won’t,” I said.

He laughed, but then quickly turned sober.

“But, as happy as your reunion makes me, there are other matters at hand,” he said.

“I know. And I’m ready to attend to them.”

“The shipments at James Industries have been working fine in your absence,” he said.

“Good. I knew they would. And Narek is capable,” I said.

“And you built a solid system there,” he said.

“You’re complimenting me. That can’t be good.”

“It’s not. Because there are matters here in Europe that have to be handled.”

“Father’s release?” I asked.

“Yes, among other things.”

“I’ll be here in Zürich until the baby is born,” I said. I’d told him about Amethyst’s pregnancy once I’d found her. He hadn’t expressed any particular feeling one way or another, but I knew he now understood why I was so adamant about getting her back.

“I thought you were going home?” he said.
