After a moment, I finally said, “I need to make sure she’s not in danger.”

Elias didn’t care about that, so I focused on something I knew he would.

“And I need to make sure she’s not compromising what we have going on at James Industries. Other than that, my interest in Amethyst is of no importance.”

That was almost convincing, but when I looked at Elias, I saw that he didn’t buy it.

But, rather than saying anything, he nodded. “I’ll put out feelers, see if there’s anything I can uncover. But, Davit?” he said.

“Yeah,” I responded.

“Once we figure out that Ms. James left of her own volition, this matter is done.”

I didn’t say anything, but I didn’t have to.

It was as close to an order as Elias had ever given me.

Now wasn’t the time to tell him it was an order I would never obey.

Davit

“What areyou doing in my home?” Raphael James said.

It was late, well past midnight, and he didn’t look pleased by my interruption. But after hours more of pacing and waiting for an update from Narek, I needed to do something.

Raphael was as good a place to start as any.

“Where is Amethyst?”

He scoffed, shrugged. “I don’t keep tabs on her.”

He didn’t, not like a father should.

In fact, his disregard of Amethyst was something I had noticed, but something that hit differently in light of where things stood.

“So she didn’t come to you looking for help to disappear?” I asked.

He was sitting in his den, wearing a burgundy satin robe. He leaned over to open the humidor on the side table next to him.

“Cigar?”

I shook my head.

“Your loss. These are some of the best in the world,” he said.

I wasn’t sure if he was trying to impress me, but he was certainly pissing me the fuck off. That wasn’t good for him, not at all.

I glared at him, and he must have sensed my irritation.

Still, whether he understood or not, he didn’t show any urgency.

He leaned back in the leather chair, lit the cigar, and took a deep inhale.

“That girl wouldn’t come to me with that kind of foolishness,” he said.

“Not after you laughed in her face?” I said.
