“No, not after I protected a very important business interest,” he countered.

“That’s one way of looking at it,” I said.

He took another puff of the cigar. “What would you have preferred, Mr. Petrosyan? That I tell her she was right, and implicate you, and myself?” he said.

“Come on, Raphael. We both know your only concern was for yourself. But you did the right thing,” I said grudgingly, hating to give Raphael credit for anything, especially not when it involved in treating Amethyst so poorly.

But I couldn’t deny the truth.

Invalidating her suspicions had helped me.

Too bad he was such an asshole.

“So,” he said after taking another puff, “if—and this is a big if—Amy would have been comfortable coming to me with her confidences before, she certainly wouldn’t after.”

“Are you worried about her?” I asked, somewhat stunned by how cavalier he seemed.

He shrugged. “She’s an adult. Smart enough, I guess. She’ll be fine,” he said.

“And what if someone is after her?”

I hated how nonchalant he seemed about Amethyst’s safety, and even more hated how concerned I was. But I couldn’t deny it, and as her father, he should at least pretend to care that she was gone.

He shrugged. “I’m a man who recognizes my limitations, and there is very little I can do in this situation. I know that the girl is fine, and besides—”

“You’re not going to get off your ass or lift a finger to help her if she’s not,” I supplied.

“Some people are more equipped for those sorts of things,” he countered.

People like me.

I stood and left without saying anything else, having wasted enough of my time. And my disgust for Raphael James made saying anything else impossible.

I was sick with nerves, worried for her in a way that I had never, ever worried for anyone.

And there he was, completely unconcerned about his own blood.

What a piece of shit.

I left his place, wondering what the next step would be.

When I returned to the safe house, Narek was there.

“What did you find?” I asked not trying to pretend I wasn’t eager.

“Nothing,” he said with a little glint in his eye, “at first.”

“Let’s see,” I responded, sitting next to him.

There was a paused video on the screen, and I recognized it was the parking lot of a store.

“This parking lot is massive, but it does have cameras,” Narek said.

“But?” I asked, hearing there was something else in his voice.

“But because of the sheer size, those cameras don’t cover every angle. And the place where we found the sedan was just outside of view,” he said.

“Intentional,” I said.
