The man noticed too, and seemed almost panicked.

He pulled out his phone, dialed a number, and after a few muttered words in the language I now recognized but still didn’t understand, he handed me the phone.

“Amethyst, it’s time to come back,” Davit said.

“I’m fine. Still enjoying my day.”

“You need to rest,” he said, his tone final.

I wanted to rebel against that, but knew I was being silly.

I also wouldn’t put it past Davit to order his…goons to bodily remove me if I didn’t comply.

Even though the guy looked nervous, like he would rather be anywhere but here, I knew he would follow Davit’s orders, no matter what they were.

“Fine,” I said through clenched teeth.

I handed the phone back to the man and then stood.

I took my time discarding my trash, and said to him, “I’ll be back in a minute.”

I didn’t look back at him as I headed to the bathroom, happy to find that it didn’t require a key.

Davit told me that public bathrooms weren’t as common here as they were in America, so I was grateful for the find.

I lingered, but then decided I needed to stop stalling.

That Davit had spent nearly two years insinuating himself into James Industries told me he was patient, but I didn’t want to push my luck. I’d probably done enough to annoy him today.

I left the bathroom and found the man waiting for me right outside the door. I paid him no mind and left the café without another word, and when I looked back, I didn’t see him.

But I knew he was there.

I suddenly found myself wondering how many more there were.

Decided it didn’t matter.

Though I had allowed myself to think that this was something else, had let the illusion of his kindness blind me, I couldn’t do that anymore.

I also knew I couldn’t risk upsetting him, not if I wanted to stay in Zürich.

And I did.

It was a small thing, but I liked Dr. Mueller, and knew that this was one of the few things that I would be able to control to some extent.

I wouldn’t risk losing it by being rash, and as I got closer to the building, I knew I’d made a mistake.

Something that was confirmed when I walked into the hotel room.

He was standing in front of the windows, next to my favorite spot.

He didn’t look at me when I entered, which I knew wasn’t a good sign.

Suddenly nervous, I took off my shoes, washed my hands, hung my jacket, and then, finally, sat in my favorite chair.

He didn’t speak, not for long time, but I could feel the tension.

It was so intense, it was impossible for me to stay quiet.
