I told myself it didn’t matter. That Davit had his priorities, and I had mine.

But that still didn’t make me feel better.

I’d been looking forward to this walk, the opportunity to clear my head, but just the opposite was happening.

I took a deep breath, then started off on the familiar path, headed toward the park.

I stopped at a café, having saved my daily cup of coffee for this, and then continued on.

Davit hadn’t said anything, but I knew his men followed. I didn’t see them, but wasn’t stupid enough to think they weren’t there.

But I tried to ignore that, and settled on the park bench, sipping my coffee.

The park was full, but not crowded, and I was able to enjoy people watching.

I saw several groups of children, and couldn’t stop myself from thinking about bringing my own child here.

Wondering if I would have the chance.

My mood soured, and suddenly anxious, I stood and walked to a nearby trashcan to discard my now empty cup.

Spotted something—someone—out of the corner of my eye.

The glance was fleeting, but she was tall, much taller than myself, thin, and though I hadn’t seen her face, she seemed familiar.

I took two steps in her direction, but in the blink of an eye, she was gone.

Part of me wondered if she had been there at all.

She had been.

I was certain of it.

But what did a fleeting glimpse of a stranger who just so happened to look familiar matter?

It didn’t.

Not when I had so many more important things to think about.

I lingered in the park for hours, until hunger, and, though I hated to admit it, the desire to see Davit, pulled me away.

Still, though I was anxious to see him, I didn’t rush back to the hotel.

Instead, I went back to the same café and got a sandwich.

I took my time eating it, enjoying every bite, and letting the time tick by.

“Ma’am?”

I jumped, then saw the tall, dark-haired man who seemed to materialize out of nowhere.

“Who are you?” I asked, suddenly on edge.

“He says it’s time for you to come back,” the man replied.

Suddenly, I was angry. I scoffed. “Get away from me.”

I noticed we were drawing attention, but I didn’t care.
