Davit

“How are Amethyst and the baby?”Elias asked a few days after Amethyst’s meeting with Raphael.

“Fine,” I responded, furrowing my brow. “Why are you asking?”

Elias just laughed. “You have to stop being so fucking suspicious,” he said.

“Then you have to stop behaving so fucking suspiciously. You’ve not often inquired after their well-being,” I pointed out.

“Maybe I was just making conversation,” Elias said.

“You also never just make conversation. Is there something we need to talk about, Elias?”

“No—”

Whatever else he was going to say was lost when Kayla walked in.

Elias practically growled, not that Kayla paid him any attention. “Isaac is in the elevators,” she said.

That cut off whatever tirade Elias was about to go on.

It got my attention as well.

About thirty seconds later, a figure appeared in the still-open door.

“Come in, Isaac,” Elias said.

Isaac’s gaze was laser-focused on Elias, though I knew that didn’t mean anything.

He had taken stock of the room and its occupants in the blink of an eye.

So I wasn’t fooled by his focus on Elias, and I definitely wasn’t fooled by the easy, almost relaxed way he approached.

“Barev,” Isaac said.

“You can leave,” Elias said.

He was looking at Isaac, but everyone in the room, including Kayla, knew who the comment was directed at.

She didn’t acknowledge Elias at all, but she did make haste toward the door. When she was gone, I noticed there was a change in Elias.

Not that he relaxed, because he was never relaxed. But he was more focused, the attention that Kayla took whenever she was near now on Isaac.

“Why are we having this visit?” Isaac asked.

He sat down in the plush chair next to mine, one that seemed comically small with him in it.

“I heard you have a new business partner,” Elias said.

“I didn’t realize my family’s business affairs are a concern of yours,” Isaac said.

“Ordinarily, I would agree, but in this instance, it is definitely my concern.”

“Why? Because Mr. James is practically Davit’s father-in-law?” Isaac asked.

He was alluding to Amethyst, though obliquely, but I forced myself to keep my cool.
