It had been a long day.

But every day since I’d left home had been long.

Home.

My stomach turned at the thought, and I glared down at the grilled chicken salad I was eating like it was to blame.

It wasn’t.

Home.

To think I’d believed in such a thing.

To think I’d been so stupid.

Tears started to well in my eyes, so I took another bite of the salad, trying to distract myself. It wouldn’t work, but at least I wouldn’t start crying in the middle of a diner attached to a hotel.

That wasn’t the kind of attention I wanted. Wasn’t attention I could afford. So I chewed, forced myself to swallow.

Let my mind drift back…

Three Weeks Ago…

“I just can’t believe it,”Carol whispered.

I didn’t say anything, but instead kept my eyes focused on my father.

“I’m sorry to have to bring you all together for something like this,” he said.

He paused for a moment, looking down, then looked up again, his expression solemn.

All the employees of James Industries were gathered in the atrium, though this meeting was much different than the last.

Instead of ice cream and chitchat, we were here to pay tribute to Keenan.

My father cleared his throat and then began.

“Such a young life lost so tragically. But we all knew Keenan, what kind of man he was. He wouldn’t want us to cry because he’s gone. He would want us to celebrate because we live.”

I looked around and, saw the teary faces of some, the stunned, shocked expressions of others.

I could only imagine what my face looked like.

I felt tears prickle at the corner of my eyes, but they stopped when I saw him.

Davit.

His expression was appropriately crestfallen, but when I met his eyes, I saw something else.

Something I didn’t have the interest or energy to explore now.
