My gut clenched, but I maintained my cool.

“Why do you say that?” I asked.

“She didn’t use her cards, but I did a little digging into the store’s records,” he said.

“How did you get access?” I asked.

I typically handled high-level hacking for the family.

“I asked,” he said.

I glared at him.

“Nicely. I asked nicely. The young lady was happy to help,” he said with a smile.

“You weren’t too conspicuous?” I asked.

“Of course not,” Narek answered, like he wasn’t six-two and dressed in all black like an extra from any mob movie made in the last twenty years.

“I’ll take your word for that,” I said, turning my attention back to the screen. “What did she buy?”

“Take a look,” he said gesturing toward the screen. “I can’t be sure, but most of the other transactions are small, diapers, milk, the kind of shit you’d run out for at one in the morning.”

“Not this one,” I said. “A suitcase. A purse. Jeans, T-shirts. Underwear. Two pairs of shoes. Toiletries. Snacks.”

“All the things you would buy if you were taking a trip,” Narek said.

I kept my eyes on the screen. “Or trying to disappear.”
