But he, like Davit, was controlled.

“I suppose that’s an oversight I can correct at some point. But right now, I think we have more pressing matters to discuss,” Davit said.

“Get that thing out of here,” my father said to someone, not us.

In almost the next instant, those little sounds Crystal was making were gone.

And I felt the weight of her loss all over again.

“You’re right about that,” my father said.

“So what then, Raphael?” Davit asked.

“I’m not ready to discuss that yet,” my father said.

“Why don’t you tell me what’s on your mind then,” he said.

“I have her. Crystal,” my father said.

He knew her name. I tucked that piece of information away for later.

“You do,” Davit said.

“I do,” my father responded unnecessarily, and I could practically envision him nodding. Could feel the smugness oozing over the phone lines.

I listened closely, trying to figure out, maybe find some clue, as to where he was.

The call was clear and didn’t have that tinniness that sometimes happens with international calls.

But in the amount of time that she had been gone, Crystal could be anywhere.

Another fact that hit me like a punch.

I tried to shake it off, focused on right now and what information I could gather.

“I know that you won’t take too kindly to me wanting to spend some quality time with my granddaughter,” my father said.

“Meaning?” Davit asked.

“Meaning that your family’s reputation is well known. I can’t even imagine what you would do to someone who, howdo I say it nicely, ‘borrowed’ your daughter,” my father said.

“Did you consider this before?” Davit asked.

“I did. And I think that I have a solution,” he said.

“And what’s that, Raphael?” Davit said.

I watched him, somewhat in awe. I was trying to hold it together, but my heart was racing, and my thoughts were moving even faster.

Davit, on the other hand, appeared to be in complete control.

Maybe it was a facade, but it was convincing to me, and I was glad for it.

“We can discuss my terms, but I think I need a little more leverage before we get to that,” he said.

“What do you want, Raphael?” Davit said, the calm in his voice only underscoring his anger.

“I’m texting you an address. You and Amy—and you and Amy only—need to meet me there in forty-five minutes,” he said.
