“I’m goingto take the lead on this,” I said.

Amethyst didn’t argue.

In fact, other than making sure it was known there was no way she wasn’t going to come, she had been completely quiet and very compliant.

I understood.

Nothing, no single thing on this earth mattered more than Crystal, and I knew that she, like me, would do whatever it took to get our baby back.

We made the drive in silence, moving out of the city and into the countryside.

It was afternoon now, and we were both running on fumes.

I looked at her, saw weariness that wasn’t just grief.

Knew that I was in the same state.

But I also knew that it didn’t matter.

As I drove, it struck me how odd this was.

It was a beautiful day, the kind when Amethyst and I would have taken Crystal to the park, or at the very least to the backyard.

Even thinking that set off an ache in my chest, one that I wanted to rub, do anything, to erase.

But I couldn’t.

And despite the sunny day, blue sky, fluffy clouds, I was almost despondent.

Powerless in a way that I had never been before.

I knew that. But I wouldn’t allow myself to consider any possibility other than Crystal returning to us.

And Raphael James suffering an excruciating death.

“We’re here,” I said.

That we had arrived was obvious, especially when I pulled the car to the side of the road and stopped.

I got out and looked around. The place was desolate, with the only structure around an abandoned building. That must have been the source of the address.

We had used geo mapping to get a feel for the location, and other than the building, there was very little around. The surrounding area was mostly just roads connecting Zurich to smaller cities.

The perfect place for this kind of drop.

I squeezed Amethyst’s hand but didn’t speak. She didn’t either. We didn’t need words. We both knew what mattered and that we would do whatever was necessary.

In the distance, I could see a vehicle approaching, watched as it got closer and closer. I noticed that Raphael hadn’t bothered with stealth.

But then again, why would he?

He had me right where he wanted me.

Before the SUV fully stopped, he stepped out of it.
